A wrap-around screened porch and 200 square feet of living space were added to a 2,000 square foot traditional 1950s brick ranch house. Interior walls were removed and ceiling heights were raised to create a modern, open, cross-ventilated, daylighted space for two empty nesters who wanted a change after their two children left for college. For the husband, a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, we designed a wooden arch at the center of the house with a raised hearth and gas fireplace to divide the living room and dining room. Custom sliding glass doors in the living room and master bedroom open to screened porches and connect interior spaces to an outside garden filled with indigenous landscape materials. Other energy-efficient renovations included aluminum, commercial-grade windows and doors, new lighting, and an electric heat pump.
